Feb 9 2003 Charleston NC News Interview. 'No one is safe' Owning a Winston Cup team is risky business in tough economic climate BY DAVID CARAVIELLO Of The Post and Courier Staff. Two years ago, spirits could not have been higher at Andy Petree Racing. The team employed more than 100 people who built engines and cars that were competitive in NASCAR's top series. It was part of a research and development alliance that also included Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt Inc. It placed its two cars in victory lane within the span of one season, despite an operating budget nearly half of those of larger Winston Cup teams. DAVE KENNEDY/AP Despite winning a pair of Winston Cup races, team owner Andy Petree has lost both his primary car sponsors over the past two years. He has one-race deal that will allow him to compete in the Daytona 500, but his operation's future is uncertain beyond that. Success soon gave way to frustration. Before the end of the 2001 season, one of Petree's two primary car sponsors, Oakwood Homes, announced it was pulling out of NASCAR. His other car sponsor, Schneider Electric, left Winston Cup one year later. In between, the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks sent the economy into a slump from which it has still not fully recovered. Thus far, Petree's efforts to find sponsors to replace the ones he lost have proven futile. "I think a lot of these companies have been riding the coattails of NASCAR," said Matt Vaughn, director of operations at Xtreme Sports Marketing, a California-based company that helps develop sponsorship deals for racing teams ranging from local tracks to Winston Cup. "For a fairly decent dollar, they're getting tons of exposure. In my opinion, the economy is an excuse to try to get the same amount of exposure for a lesser dollar. Let's face it, if you go to a restaurant out here where we live in L.A., you're going to have to wait 45 minutes. People are still going out. My neighbors are still buying new cars. Movie theatres are still selling millions of dollars in tickets, and NASCAR stands are still jam-packed." But sponsorship money is still tight, a fact not lost on drivers who have seen fellow competitors forced to miss races because of a lack of funding. "I've got probably 10 different teams out here in the west that are literally parked. I don't care if it's the $15 million sponsorship or the $300,000 sponsorship, they're hurting," said Vaughn, whose clients have included Winston Cup drivers Brett and Todd Bodine. "Something needs to happen. Are the drivers worried? Absolutely. I talk to them every day, and I know they're worried, at every level." __________________________________________________________________________ Source: NASCAR Media Relations Date: 01/06/2003 Jerome, Idaho (January 5, 2003) The anticipation of the upcoming season has race teams feverishly working on new cars and paint schemes. There are sponsorship proposal to review and finalize, and there are schedules to plan. This story is played out all across the country at all levels of motorsports. It is no different for Eddy McKean, the 2002 Featherlite Southwest Series champion, and former two-time NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge regional champion. McKean will have had less than six weeks to bask in the glow of his first NASCAR Touring championship before the green flag waves on the 2003 racing season at Phoenix Int'l Raceway the first weekend of February. That suits McKean just fine. He has had a busy "off-season" making plans that he hopes will lead to continued advancement through NASCAR's ladder system. McKean will return to defend his 2002 Featherlite Southwest Series championship and looks to continue where he left off. He has his sights set squarely on a win in the season opener at Phoenix Int'l Raceway, a track where he has two runner-up finishes in the last four races at the Desert Jewell. "I really want to win at Phoenix," McKean said. "It is an important track with a lot of history. To win there you have to be the best." "Anything is possible in this sport," McKean said. "With the desire, skill, and resources you can compete at any level." With that in mind, McKean plans to test the waters of the NASCAR Busch Series this season. During the past month he purchased Jeff Burton's Busch car and will rent engines from Roush Racing in an attempt to step up. McKean is also looking for new marketing partners that share his vision and who are looking for a vehicle into motorsports. "We have a lot to offer a company," McKean said. "We have won races and championships, we have a successful team, and a proven track record." "We plan on running the Busch races at Vegas and Phoenix this year," McKean stated. "Depending on how we do we may run Charlotte and Atlanta. There are only so many opportunities in your life and right now it is my time to race. Let's see what we can do." To bolster his team, McKean has made several changes during the off-season. The first was to move his operation back to Idaho from Bakersfield, Calif. in an effort to be more hands on. He has also landed the services of veteran NASCAR Winston West Series mechanic Robert Dixon who has worked for Bill MacAnally the past several seasons. Dixon will assume Crew Chief responsibilities for McKean Racing. "Robert brings a lot of "big car" experience," McKean said. "He worked with us last year when we ran a MacAnally car in two Winston West shows. His experience will compliment the team and will greatly aid our Tour program." McKean still has a lot to prove in the Featherlite Southwest Series and plans to make that his priority. "No one really had a great year last season," McKean stated. "The measure of this series is winning and running in the top-five every race. Winning is really the goal this year." In the history of the Featherlite Southwest Series, only Ron Hornaday Jr. has been able to when back-to-back titles (92 & 93) and only Hornaday and Steve Portenga have won multiple championships with two apiece. The odds makers may favor Kanke, Raudman, or Lamar in 2003, but the champion driver from Jerome, Idaho will have something to say about that. __________________________________________________________________________________ THE ESSENCE OF TEAMWORK Source: McKean Racing Date: 11/14/2002: Phoenix, Ariz. "Teamwork means we share a common ideal and embrace a common goal. Regardless of our differences, we strive shoulder-to-shoulder, confident in one another's faith, trust and commitment. In the end, teamwork can be summed up in five short words... We believe in each other. " McKean Motorsports entered into the 2002 season, confident in their ability to improve on the 5th place finish in the 2001 season. Going into the final race at PIR in Phoenix, AR., the team had a small led over the second place points driver, M.K. Kanke. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Mr. Kanke would not start the final event of the season. This left the third place point’s driver, Burney Lamar, just 103 points behind McKean, heading into the event. McKean figured if Lamar won the event; he did set fast time in qualifying, McKean would need to finish 28th or better to clench the championship. McKean Motorsports performance at PIR in past events had been good, finishing only once out of the top 10, and they felt they could possible win the race along with the championship. The race started out good. McKean had a sixth place starting position. He would opt to stay out during a caution and take over the lead, leading 28 laps. But after a pit stop, the car seemed to handle different. After struggling to keep the car off the wall, the next caution would come out, after McKean went two laps down. The crew thought the car might have had a right side tire going down. They decided to pit and change right sides, again. The following caution came out and the crew called Eddy back into the pits, changing the left rear tire, which was flat. At this point, McKean was just trying to finish the race in one piece. The checkered flag would fly with McKean finishing in the 24th position and Lamar finishing in 14th after he suffered from tire problems. I don't think either team was sure who had won the championship until NASCAR announced it. McKean Motorsports would celebrate a disappointing finish, worst of the season, with a season championship. An emotional McKean would thank his crew and sponsors in victory lane. The whole team showed the emotion of only competing in the series for two seasons and winning a championship. The team crew chief, Marc Lundgren, would be at a loss for words when he and McKean met up in the winner’s circle. The rest of the crew would celebrate with high-fives and lots of hugs. McKean said, " It was the crew that got me here, I know it and they know it." A special thanks to the crew of the car # 19, for a great season. Congratulations - Marc Lundgren; Crew Chief, "Big" Jim Hooker; truck driver and exceptional cook, Denny Moyer; tire changer and handyman, Adolph Garcia; truck driver and handyman, George Hart; handyman, tire changer and marketing, Eric John; tire specialist, Roy Molsee; jackman and tire specialist apprentice, Les Denherder; spotter and exceptional marketing partner, and Lynnette McKean; owner, financer and scorer. Without the faith, trust and commitment of each of these people, McKean Motorsports would not be celebrating a spectacular season. As everyone in Motorsports is aware, you can't get to this point without the help of marketing partners. The company's that have stood by McKean Motorsports are greatly appreciated - Victory Circle Chassis and Parts and H.P.S. Mechanicals, both based in Bakersfield, CA. IronClad based in Los Angeles, CA, Matt Vaughn - Xtreme Motorsports Marketing based in Victorville, CA., Frieghtrain Peter's Motors based in Lake Port, CA., and Magic Valley Pipe and Steel, based in Jerome, ID.. The race series will be taking about two months off. The first race, for the 2003 season, will be sometime in February back at PIR in Phoenix, AR.. McKean Motorsports will be busy with special appearances and radio interviews. McKean Motorsports will officially be crowned NFSWS champion in December at the El Dorado Hotel and Casino in Reno, NV.. After a few weeks of R & R, the team and Eddy will be ready to defend the title. They look forward to an exciting & competitive 2003 season in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series. May everyone’s holiday season be filled with love and happiness. Congratulations to Mckean Motor Sport, Eddy and Lynnette Mckean, the whole crew and family. Job well done! 2002 NASCAR Southwest Tour Championship. __________________________________________________________________________ Xtreme Motorsports Marketing Date: 11/14/20r 8, 2002 e Cup opportunity Victorville couple devoted to NASCAR heads to Winston race MARK A. PEINADO/Sports Writer They say NASCAR fans are the most loyal, that a Winston Cup fan will run through a brick wall or beat up his best friend if it means defending the honor of his favorite driver. While Matt and Audrey Vaughn don’t do any of those things, their current venture is a place any NASCAR fan would envy. The Victorville couple is at Phoenix International Raceway sponsoring a car for this weekend’s Winston Cup Series race — NASCAR’S top circuit. The Vaughns, along with Tad Honeycutt, run Xtreme Motorsports Marketing. The company, which was started by Matt Vaughn, is sponsoring the No. 37 Pontiac driven by Jeff Jefferson and owned by Derrick Cope and Warren Johnson. Jefferson will attempt to qualify the car for Cope today and run in Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts 500. “For us to be able to sponsor a car, it’s good exposure for our company,” Matt Vaughn said. “Living in Victorville, you’re in the center of everything. We’re three hours from every major short track.” Jefferson, 30, has been one of the Vaughns’ clients for about a year. Racing regularly on the the Busch Northwest series — one of NASCAR’s lower-tier series — Jefferson is the kind of driver the Vaughns cater to. Xtreme Motorsports Marketing does Web sites, driver portfolios, gets sponsors for the drivers and markets them around the country. “A lot of racers don’t know how to market themselves,” Matt Vaughn said. “We’re their spokesperson.” Matt Vaughn has been around racing his whole life. His father weened him on the sport. Vaughn eventually got his own racing career going and raced in the Pro-4 Modifieds series. “I’ve been a fan of NASCAR just as long as I can remember,” Matt Vaughn said. “We used to go to the local tracks. The excitement, the thrills of the high speed, the sounds of the cars, I got into that. “I was living in Texas and I was one of the guys who showed up at the race track with cool sponsors. I was just able to market myself.” Vaugh took that ability to promote and began consulting other drivers on how to do it. Vaughn started his consulting business several years ago but he needed a backer to take it to the next level. He found it in Honeycutt, who is involved in the music indrustry. The two merged ideas and came up with Xtreme Motorsports Marketing. “I had some resources that we could direct toward existing operations,” Honeycutt said. “I have never been involved in anything like this. I understand the values of marketing in NASCAR. Matt is more of the expert in the racing and choosing what events.” Now they are embarking on their biggest business venture to date, with a rookie driver no less. But Jefferson, who is a veteran of Phoenix International Speedway, is no average rookie. He has raced at the 1.5-mile oval track twice in a Winston West car and three times in a Southwest Series car. “I’m really excited,” Jefferson said. “I can’t wait until Friday (qualifying) and we get her in the show. It’s definitely the one on the Winston Cup schedule I’d be more comfortable with. In the Winston West, I broke the track record in qualifying. “It’s an experience of a lifetime. I don’t really consider it until I get through qualifying and get put it in the show, 36th or better. That’s what we’re seriously looking for. Man, I’m going to do that.” For Jefferson and Xtreme Marketing to make their Sunday debut, the car will have to qualify with a time among the fastest 36. __________________________________________________________________________ Source: Xtreme Motorsports Date: 10/18/2002 Raybestos Brakes Northwest Tour Driver Making his Winston Cup Debut Raybestos Brakes Northwest Tour Driver Jeff Jefferson will be making his Winston Cup Debut, November 11, 2002 at Phoenix International Raceway. Jeff Jefferson resides in Naches, WA with his wife Dione and is the son of George Jefferson, a championship car owner with more than three decades of experience in NASCAR Winston West and Pacific Northwest stock car racing. The packed workshop that lasted all-day was full of information on chassis set-up, team organization and marketing tools, shock building, the art of spotting and track tuning. "There was not a dull moment," said Late Model Driver, Rick Ruzbarsky. "We've worked with Busch teams in the past, and this confirmed that we're doing the right things. We picked up new things like set-ups and spotter information. I have an awesome spotter already, but he picked up a couple of things." "I got a lot of information on chassis set-up and marketing," said SRL official Jan White. "I needed a place to go where someone had the time to explain things. There just isn't time at the shop or at the track." The workshop, presented by former NASCAR Winston West driver L.J.
